- Lot Description
A George III Ebonized Tall Case Clock, Joseph Gray, Durham, Fourth Quarter 18th Century. The case of slender proportions.
The eight-inch arched brass dial with silvered chapter ring having Roman hours and Arabic minutes and matte center within cast spandrels, inscribed 'Joseph Grey / Durham' to the lunette, the single train thirty-hour movement with four knopped pillars, and anchor escapement striking on a bell.
Dimensions: Height 82 1/2in; width 12 1/4in; depth 9in.
Provenance: Property from the Collection of an English Gentleman.
Condition
The case with typical marks, wear, nick, and surface scratches commensurate with age and use. Shrinkage and age cracks. Typical refreshing to case. Repairs, replacements and rebuilding throughout. Evidence of old wood worm throughout. The dial and movement appear to be in an overall restored condition. With pendulum and one weights. At the time the condition report was conducted, the clock was maintaining power and striking correctly. We cannot guarantee the completeness or functionality of the clock's movement.
