A George II Figured Walnut Tall Case Clock, John Brice, Sandwich, Second Quarter 18th Century.
The 11 3/4-inch arched brass dial with silvered chapter ring having Roman hours and Arabic minutes with a subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture and two arbors to the Rococo engraved matte center within cast spandrels, a silvered plaque inscribed 'JOHN BRICE. SANDWICH.' to the lunette above a rolling moon phase, the twin train movement with five knopped pillars, and anchor escapement striking on a bell.
The hood with molded arched cornice above an open fret carved frieze over an arched glazed dial door, flanked by four free standing colonettes, above a cove molded rectangular waist with thumb molded and feather banded tombstone door, above a molded plinth box base.
Dimensions: Height 82 1/2in; width 22 3/4in; depth 12 1/2in.
Provenance: Property from the Collection of an English Gentleman.
Footnote: John Brice is recorded as a clockmaker working in Sandwich, Kent. Beginning his apprenticeship in 1723 and made free in 1740. Brice died in 1755.
The walnut veneered case with severe and significant damage and loss from moisture and improper storage over a prolonged period of time. Most of veneer loss is retained. Shrinkage and age cracks. With pendulum and two weights. At the time the condition report was conducted, the clock was striking correctly, but not currently maintaining power. We cannot guarantee the completeness or functionality of the clock's movement.
