- Lot Description
A Federal Parcel Gilt, Eglomise and Mahogany Banjo Clock, Lemuel Curtis (American, 1790-1857), Concord, Massachusetts, First Quarter 19th Century. The white-painted circular dial having Roman numerals, inscribed 'L. Curtis / Concord'. Having a single train movement. The lower reverse-painted glass tablet depicting the mythological Roman goddess Aurora on her chariot, inscribed 'AURORA'.
Dimensions: Height 29 3/4in; width 10 1/4in; depth 4in.
Provenance: Property from a New Jersey Private Collection.
Footnote: Lemuel Curtis was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts and was the nephew of clockmaker Aaron Willard and likely trained with clockmaker Simon Willard in Roxbury. Curtis set up shop in Concord, Massachusetts in 1811.
Condition
Lacking finial. The case has been refreshed (re-gilt/painted). Old dry finish to mahogany surface. The dial with craquelure overall. Rubbing and wear to the gilding overall. The reverse painted glass tablets appears to be replaced/repainted. The pierced brass metalwork to either side of the clock's throat with heavy toning and darkening. Dust accumulation to exterior of case. With winding key, weight and pendulum. We cannot guarantee the completeness or functionality of the clock's movement.
