An American Broderie Perse Chintz Applique Quilt, Probably New Jersey, Circa 1835.
Centered by a large peacock and plum tree central vignette surrounded by pheasants, flanked by floral sprays framed by a sawtooth diamond-in-the-square, the main border with cut-out pheasant, plum tree, peacock and floral chintz, all within a large sawtooth border to four sides.
With exceptional and intricate trapunto (stuffed technique) with hand quilting at 12 stitches per inch to cotton ground. The trapunto quilting with pineapples, berries and running feather throughout, all connected by tendril motifs. Finished with hand sewn turned edges.
Dimensions: Dimensions approximately 103 x 103in.
Provenance: Property from the Collection of C. Thomas Attix Jr., East Windsor, New Jersey.
Footnote: Broderie Perse is French for "Persian Embroidery", a technique where fabric such as birds and flowers are cut-out and appliqued onto another fabric to create a design. This technique was traditionally worked in Chintz fabrics and gained its height of popularity in the United states in the late 18th-early 19th century and earlier in Europe during the 17th century. Broderie Perse likely made its way from India where much of the chintz fabric was printed.
Wear commensurate with age and use. Scattered stains and discoloration throughout, otherwise very good condition.
