Luis Urribari (b. 1986, Maracaibo, Venezuela), grounds his practice in the imaginary. Employing a clear architectural sensibility through his paintings and sculpture, he explores tensions and harmonies in time, nature, and space.
Urribarri is deeply curious about the psychological influence of architecture and its power to generate a personal awareness of scale and presence. In his work, the viewer’s interpretation is as much a material as plaster, marble, canvas, or steel. He uses these physical materials to manipulate light and perspective, ultimately creating portals to daydreamed environments. Where architecture is explicit, Urribarri’s painting and sculptures are expressive and unprescribed. While, for him, the pleasure exists in the process, the work is ultimately presented as an invitation for conversation on materiality and the productive capacity of stillness.
Urribarri obtained a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Architectural Design in 2020 from Parsons School of Design. With an extensive background in architecture and interiors, Urribarri has shown works at Laverdin Gallery, Saphira and Ventura Gallery, The Kips Bay Decorators Show, Michael Dawkins Home, and NEST Interiors NYC.
