A statement by the artist, Jeffrey Gibson:
"PLAYING WITH FIRE" is part of a recent series of works on paper that began about two years ago. These pieces combine multiple aspects of my painting practice, but also my collections of vintage objects through print and sometimes the objects themselves, materials such as beads, pattern and collage. This piece features an image of a child's plastic toy that is meant to represent an Indigenous person, and a vintage pin that references a couple of different pop cultural graphic histories while promoting anti-racism.
Jeffrey Gibson's (b. 1972, Colorado) artworks make reference to various aesthetic and material histories rooted in Indigenous cultures of the Americas, and in modern and contemporary subcultures. He is a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and is half Cherokee. Jeffrey is represented by Sikkema Jenkins & Co gallery in NYC, Kavi Gupta gallery in Chicago, Roberts Projects in Los Angeles, and Stephen Friedman Gallery in London. His work can be found in the numerous public and private collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Crystal Bridges Museum, and the Wellin Museum, among others.
