watercolor on paper laid on card, signed at lower right "W. L. Sonntag," matted and framed under glass.SS 7.25 x 9 5/8 in.; DOA 14.25 x 16 5/8 in.This watercolor likely depicts an abandoned logging camp in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Sonntag began painting more in watercolors in the 1870s. This work is perhaps an appropriate pendant for the watercolor, Mountain Landscape, in the collection of the Fogg Museum at Harvard. Both works appear to be finished paintings, with intricate details and bold signatures, however the brightness of the Fogg's painting is in stark contrast to the grey tones in the present work. But despite the cleared forest and broken trees, a clear blue sky is breaking through the darker clouds and sunlight strikes the large boulders and water in the foreground, implying the rejuvenation of Mother Nature against man's industriousness.
Condition
The paper was laid down on a later cardstock when framed.
