This was among the photographs Evans took under the commission of Gifford Cochran, a wealthy colleague of Lincoln Kirstein. Cochran asked Evans to photograph his Greek Revival home in Croton Falls, NY, along with other architecturally significant in nearby towns. This request eventually led to Evans documenting "the finest surviving examples of Greek Revival architecture in the South." (Hambourg, Maria Morris, et al. Walker Evans.
