antique, could be from the Nara or Heian period based on style including single-woodblock construction (ichiboku-zukuri), the deeply detailed face, teeth fully modeled in the open mouth, deep facial wrinkles on forehead and around the mouth, body shape and slim arms, the ascetic monk is depicted here kneeling with hands in anjali mudra, mounted to a later base.26.25 in. (figure only)Loss to tip of nose, both ears and knob on head are modern breakages; numerous stable checks; cracks throughout and breaks of wood underneath, some remnants of original dark surface.
