oil on canvas, unsigned, presented in the likely original gilt frame with mat and burnished pebble motif to cove, the frame retaining an old O.J. Copeland of Pittsfield, MA label, the canvas with stencil for Williams, Stevens, Williams of New York, NY.SS 11.25 x 15 1/8 in.; DOA 17 x 21 in.Painted in the mid-19th century, this work follows in the wake of American genre artists like Eastman Johnson and William Sydney Mount. However, despite the domestic grouping of a family gathering around a "Black Dandy," the painting upholds stereotypes and caricatures of the period.Professionaly cleaned and ready for display.
