- Lot Description
oil on canvas (lined), presented in a later gilt composition frame.SS 62 x 43 in.; DOA 72 x 52 in.The iconography of Saint James slaying the Moors is among the recognizable in Christian art. The saint is almost always depicted brandishing a weapon upon a white horse, with the conquered men falling below. In Latin America, the image was altered to support the Spanish conquest by transposing Indigenous men for the Moors. This large painting is an important example of this type, featuring three men in Andean featherwork tunics falling before the glowingly triumphant saint and his steed. Similar paintings and sculptures with this theme are housed in the Cathedral of Cuzco and the Casa Garcilaso-Museo Histí_rico Regional. Purchased by Mr. Kendall while living in Peru during the 1960s.Over-cleaned; some scattered spot touch-ups.
