Together two large engraved acts depicting a woman desperately keeping her baby above the waves and the two of them snatched to safety by a daring rescue. 23x29¾ inches each sheet size, image 19x24 inches with wide margins; light surface age and foxing,
New York, circa 1855
John C. McRae (aka MacCrae) was a New York artist employed by publishers from approximately 1845 to 1880 to depict specialized portraits and scenes from American history. McRae was one of the first American artists to utilize the "mixed method technique," in which foreground figures are delineated by engraving, while backgrounds are composed largely of mezzotint tones.
