Portrait of Woman, Graphite on Paper, signed 9 1/4" W by 13" H, signed Lower Right Alberto Giacometti 1947 verso Well known Collector's stamp, Darius Talyarken, London Alberto Giacometti Born: 1901 - Borgonovo/Stampa, Switzerland Died: 1966 - Chur, Switzerland Known for: Surreal elongated figural sculpture, painting Alberto Giacometti was born in Borgonovo in 1901 as a son of the artist Giovanni Giacometti. He is considered one of the major 20th century sculptors. After having studied for a short period of time in Geneva and Italy, he eventually moved to Paris to study sculpture under Bourdelle from 1922-1925. During that time, his art was influenced by impressionist and post-impressionist elements of style. This was followed by an experimental period starting in 1925. From 1930-1935 he was associated with the surrealist movement. Then he began to develop his unique style, creating emaciated and elongated figures captured in space. These isolated figures feature a mental link to existentialism, which originated from his friendship to the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980).
