A rare presentation cane with gold-filled handle marked 'M. F. to C. Fillmore' (Millard Fillmore, U. S. President from 1850 to 1853; C. Fillmore was Cyrus, a brother). This knob-shaped handle is the golden counterpart of a silver one pictured in Catherine Dike's 'Canes in the United States' in the chapter on canes worn by U. S. Presidents. The handle is 2" high X 1" at its widest, and shows only slight abrasions including a flat dent on the top and a scrape on the neck, none obscuring the inscriptions. The cane was gifted by Millard (best known as the 13th President of the United States) to younger brother Cyrus around 1870. This cane was acquired in 1992 by Ambassador Josiah H. Beeman from the estate of Wilma Gust, a direct descendant of Cyrus Fillmore. Its shaft is a heavy ebony wood, ended by a 1" high bimetal ferrule. O.L. is 36 ½".
Each auction has different shipping terms but the buyer always pays.
