American Revolution era sword cane. 'Liberty, 1781' is engraved in a metal cartouche on the wood shaft below the join of shaft and handle/blade. A series of 13 five-pointed stars are pressed into the shaft near the cartouche. The join itself is surrounded by simply-designed metal bands--one bearing the following: 'NGM'(Maybe National Guard Mass.) 'Join or Die'. The latter suggests that the cane originated circa the Revolution, reinforcing the aforementioned 1781 date. The handle of the cane has a knob with a hole drilled through its neck, and a lower body into which the 20" sword blade is anchored. The blade is a flattened ellipse shape with two edges, and it has no etching but shows some rust. It fits snugly in the shaft/scabbard, held by friction. This cane has a simple iron ferrule that is 5/8" high and, despite wiggling, is connected securely with a rivet to the shaft. O.L. is 34".
Each auction has different shipping terms but the buyer always pays.
