Selection of fine canes
Kimball Sterling kimballsterling@earthlink.net-Ca. 1900 -One legged bamboo and iron shooting seat cane with folding upper part, which gave support for a semi-seated position and allowed some mobility when shooting. Notable is its lightweight and comfortable handling as a cane as well as a seat. -It survived in fully working initial condition and is radiates a lovely feel of age. -Luckily, this cane can be traced in a St Étienne catalog from 1910, which leads us to assume that it might be French. St Étienne is an industrial town of east-central France, capital of the department of Loire and reputed for its guns and arms manufacturer “Manufacture d’armes de Saint-Étienne”. Notable the legend of the illustration “Sièges Pliants”, which translates “Folding Seats”. -When seat canes first appeared, they were adapted and used mostly for hunting, thus their name “Shooting Sticks”. The first seat-cane patent was filed in 1813 in Great Britain by John Thackray, only to be followed by 300 more patents in various Western countries. Each patent differs slightly from the others, though the principle remains the same. In certain cases, the only addition is often a gadget such as a sunshade in a leg, a bottle, a fishing net, a spade or a pipe. -H. 10” x 4 ¼”, 14” when unfolded, O.L. 33” -$200-$300
Each auction has different shipping terms but the buyer always pays.
