Alpaca Day Cane -Ca. 1900 -White metal crook handle with an appearance similar to silver fashioned in a hexagonal configuration with repeating panels of trailing geometrical pattern fitted with an integral and plain collar in an identical hexagonal configuration and a dark, almost black rosewood shaft with a white metal ferrule. Sturdy and decorative cane and as fresh as on its first day. -Alpaca refers to an alloy that imitates sterling silver. This non-precious bright silvery-grey metal alloy is made up of copper, zinc and nickel and sometimes iron. -In 1823 there was a contest among German & Austrian metalwork companies to develop an alloy that appeared similar to silver. After the Austrian manufacturer, Berndorf AG, trademarked and made popular the brand name Alpaca, this term was used more frequently than the term Nickel Silver. -Alloy is a substance composed of two or more metals usually manufactured by being dissolved into each other when molten.
