Note: New London County, Connecticut cabinetmakers in the last quarter of the 18th century often incorporated aspects of Boston and Newport?s aesthetic repertoire while adding their own idiosyncratic flourishes. With its molded serpentine top and facade, apron carved on all three sides with graduated volutes leading to ogre bracket feet, large Imported (Birmingham) brasses and escutcheons and steel locks on all four drawers, this chest would have been an impressive status symbol in rural Connecticut or Vermont at the time. The elaborately scrolled apron, consisting of twelve outward facing scrolls, relates to cabinetwork found on several pieces associated with Norwich, Conn.
Provenance: An engraved brass plaque affixed to the upper right side of the chest states, "Jonathan Hunt / M. July 15, 1779 / Lavina Swan". This chest may possibly have been gifted as a marriage chest to the couple by a relative from Connecticut. (His mother, Anna Ellsworth, was born into a prominent family in Windsor, Conn. -her great great grandfather was the Governor, 1656, of the Connecticut colony).
Jonathan Hunt (1738-1823) Jonathan Hunt married Lavinia Swan (1749-1834) on July 15, 1779. Hunt held various political positions in Vermont, and served as sheriff of Windham County in 1781. He was high sheriff in 1782, and judge of the Windham County Court in 1783. He served as the second Lieutenant Governor of the state of Vermont from 1794 to 1796. In 1800 Hunt served as one of Vermont's presidential electors.
Hunt is considered one of the founders of Vermont as well as one of its earliest pioneers and largest landowners. The chest descended directly through the family to the former owners, who still live near, Vernon, Vermont, where Hunt once resided.
