Circa 1800
Transfer decorated pitcher in tribute to George Washington, d. 1799, the front side of the pitcher bears a design with a medallion containing the words, 'PEACE, PLENTY, and INDEPENDENCE.' Above the medallion is a spread-winged eagle perched on a cannon, to the left is the allegorical figure of 'Plenty' holding a cornucopia, to the right is a figure of 'Peace' lighting fire to the instruments of war, an oval slogan below the spout, depicts a description of the sentiment toward Washington, 'A MAN / without example / A PATRIOT / without reproach', the opposite side displays an obelisk with the famous historic legend reading, "First in War First in Peace First in Fame First in Virtue Born 1732 Died 1799". It depicts mourners at Washington’s tomb: There is an angel, a uniformed soldier (presumably Lafayette), a balding man in a dark suit, another soldier in uniform and an Native Indian. The outside of the print is ringed by the names of the 13 original states.
Note: 'First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.' These famous words about George Washington come from a eulogy written by Henry “Light Horse" Harry Lee. Lee was a major general in the Continental Army, member of the Continental Congress, governor of Virginia, father of the famous Civil War general Robert E. Lee, and close friend of George Washington.
