- Lot Description
A framed ink on paper comic strip titled "The Wide Open Shop" and signed by Will B. Johnstone and dated "'37." The strip was published in the New York World - Telegram in response to the news item stated at the top: "Union charges unfair practice by company in staging strip-tease show to lure workers away from labor organization meetings." Johnstone has inscribed "To Gypsy Louise Rose Hovick Lee - with best wishes for her continued success - from her comic-strip-teaser, Will B. Johnstone." Johnstone was a cartoonist who also wrote for the Marx Brothers' Broadway shows and films.
