Rodenberry first reached out to United States Air Force Colonel Donald I. Prickett, with the Weapons Effects and Tests Group in Albuquerque, New Mexico in early May of 1964. Contrary to popular belief, Prickett did not immediately put Roddenberry in touch with Harvey Lynn, the man who would become technical advisor for the series, he instead contacted Mr. Jack Whitener a nuclear physicist with the RAND corporation in California. The first letter dated May 25, 1964 from Prickett to Whitener included “…a series prospectus written by a friend who is a TV writer and producer.” Prickett goes on to explain that “the writer is interested in the reaction of people in the scientific community” and “may also be interested in getting some advice on this fairly soon.” The attached 19 page pitch outlines the concept for the show starring “Captain April” of a ship called the “Yorktown.” The pitch goes on to describe the series as "the Wagon Train to the stars" and includes Roddenberry’s made up version of an equation called the Drake formula with handwritten note reading “temporary – get correct formula.”
The lot also includes further correspondence from Roddenberry to Whitener in a typed letter dated September 24, 1964 on Desilu Productions letterhead and signed, “Gene R.” Rodenberry writes, “Thought you might be interested in taking a peek at our final version of the STAR TREK pilot script.” The enclosed copy of the “The Cage” script lists a revision date of September 22, 1964 and was included with the letter in a post marked Desilu Productions envelope also included with this lot. Although Mr. Whitener declined to advise the show, he kept these documents in his files, which have been in the possession of his family since 1964.
Note: The family has confirmed the correct spelling of their name as Whitener despite the fact that the documents included in this lot are all misspelled “Whitner”
