- Lot Description
A pair of San Francisco Digger items. A 1% free broadside poster that became the Digger trademark for advertising their street events. The image shows two Chinese assassins waiting beneath a sign with the character for 'revolution.' The second item is an original "Digger Dollar" housed in a frame with a sign that reads "Diggers Welcome." The Digger Dollar was created with a copied image of a dollar bill that was altered. At the top of the bill is an oft heard Digger message "Within a Free Frame of Reference." Instructions on verso of the Digger's Welcome sign read "Place this sign in your window all through the summer whenever you have food, shelter or clothing for any of the young seekers." The Diggers were active in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco from 1966-1968.
The Diggers describe themselves as an anarchist guerrilla street theatre group. They organized street theatre, direct action and art happenings to communicate their message of "back to the land." Among their social activities they offered free food daily, free health care and organized a free store. The group took their name from the English Diggers who promoted a philosophy of a currency free society without private property. Actor Peter Coyote was one of the group's founding members.
