An Etoile de Cristal International Grand Prize award for best film awarded by L'Académie du Cinéma to Herbert (H.J.) Biberman in 1956 for his film Salt of the Earth (IPC, 1954). Etching on the glass reads "L'Académie du Cinéma/ Paris le 21 Juin 1956." Accompanied by a copy of Salt of the Earth: The Story of a Film by Herbert Biberman (Boston: Beacon Press, 1965) signed on the end paper by the author and his son, Daniel. Biberman was a member of The Hollywood Ten, a group of writers, producers and directors that were imprisoned and blacklisted in Hollywood by House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). Salt of the Earth was based on a mine strike in New Mexico.
