A 1949 Mercury Series 9CM custom convertible featured throughout the motion picture musical Grease (Paramount, 1978). Nicknamed “Hell’s Chariot,” the Merc was originally built and customized by Eddie Paul of Customs by Eddie Paul to create the Scorpions gang’s signature convertible. The film culminates with John Travolta’s character, Danny, racing against Hell’s Chariot, driven by his nemesis, “Craterface,” the leader of the Scorpions gang played by Dennis Stewart. Hell’s Chariot lines up with Danny in the dry riverbed of the Los Angeles River in downtown L.A. to begin their race. Hell’s Chariot dishes out damage, rear ending Travolta’s car and cutting into its side with the Chariot’s razor hubcaps. Despite the abuse Travolta’s car endures by Hell’s Chariot, he wins the day, the car, and the girl, Sandy, played by Olivia Newton-John. Signed on the dashboard by Newton-John.
The Merc has the original, rebuilt 255 cid V-8 engine with 3-speed manual transmission, including the optional Touch-O-Matic overdrive, a 1950 grill, applied “Scorpions” stickers on both doors, the razor hubcaps in the race scene, period movie correct Firestone tires and Firestone stickers on the wing windows, recreated original license plates. VIN 9CM256273. Also present is Hell’s Chariot's original front bumper which is bent from rear ending Travolta's car in the race scene.
Paul was contracted by Paramount Studios to create all 42 cars seen in Grease, one of the highlights being Hell’s Chariot. Two versions of Hell’s Chariot were created by Paul, a stunt version (no longer in existence) and the main Hell’s Chariot used throughout the film. The car offered for sale here is distinguishable by its square-top wing windows (the stunt version having rounded-top) and was used for every scene in the film except the stunt shots during the final race scene. The ’49 Merc used to create this vehicle was originally a hardtop, customized by Paul to give it the look of a 1950 Mercury convertible. The car was additionally used in the films Streets of Fire (Universal, 1984) and Used Cars (Columbia, 1980).
Accompanied by a notarized letter signed by Paul identifying this car as the “Hell’s Chariot” built for Paramount Studios and used in Grease , by a vintage photograph of Paul with both versions of Hell’s Chariot parked in front of his auto body shop before being released for filming, and by a copy of Grease.
