The coat was in the possession of J.D. Sumner until 1980, when he sold the coat to Elvis collector and former Elvis Presley Museum owner Mike Moon. Sumner was a close friend of Elvis as well as leader of the Stamps Quartet, which supplied backup for Presley on stage and in the studio. While owned by Moon, the coat was on display at his Elvis Presley Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; the Museum closed in 2013. The coat is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Moon, a photocopy of the original bill of sale from Sumner, an original vintage photograph of Presley with Sumner and others wearing a similarly styled coat, a copy of the book Elvis , Photographing the King by Sean Shaver (Kansas City: Timur, 1981) that includes an image of Presley wearing a similar coat, and a museum brochure and postcard.
