Originally this image was created in a smaller format by Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse and was reproduced on the front cover of Mickey Hart’s first solo album. It was recorded during a time when he was taking a break from playing drums for the Grateful Dead. For Kelley and Mouse the album cover art represented a milestone in their careers. The lettering and abstract calligraphic forms which form the circle reveal the skills they acquired from many years of creating innovative letter forms. The airbrushing on the heart, wings and glowing kaleidoscopic rainbow light glowing in the background is the result of the additional time it took to master the airbrush painting technique. The colorful central image design is set off by a solid black background, which was a design idea that they began using in the early 1970s and which was widely imitated by other designers in the mid to late 1970s. The late Alton Kelley (1940-2008) was a leading artist in San Francisco psychedelic, rock art history and this image and painting is considered by many to be one of the best of his career.
Together with a mixed media on board depiction of Kelley's personal monogram housed in an ornate gold frame. Signed and dated lower right, "Kelley, 99," and a vintage poster advertising the album and a copy of the album.
