Untitled 90-10 (turquoise, orange, black, lavender), signed verso: P. Krebs, unframed oil on canvas laid to panel, 44'' H x 44'' W, est: $800/1200 Note: Hard edge vertical bands of color in the present work and the following three lots are typical of Penelope Krebs' Los Angeles abstractionist work from the 1980s and 1990s. ''Here, figure is indistinguishable from ground, as the back-to-back stripes (Krebs prefers to call them bands, thus insisting upon their non-referentiality) extend from edge to canvas edge. And here, surface triumphs resolutely over depth, the images aggressively frontal, their sides left deliberately unpainted so as to deny painting's objecthood'' (S. Kandel, Los Angeles Times, ''Penelope Krebs: A Surfeit of Surfaces'', 28 November 1991). Krebs studied abstract art under John McCraken and James Haywood at UCSB. In recent years the artist creates nature watercolors utilizing precision techniques honed from her color band period. Provenance: Thomas Babeor & Co., La Jolla, CA; Property from a Corporate Collection, San Diego, CA, acquired from the above, April 1994
Visual: Generally good condition. A small tear along the left center edge with minor paint loss. Light surface scratches scattered throughout. Blacklight: No evidence of restoration under blacklight.
