''Laguna Beach Festival Of Arts'', Laguna Arts Fair, El Paseo Street, Laguna Beach, CA, signed lower right: Joane Cromwell, signed again, titled and dated on an artist's label affixed verso: 1936, oil on canvas, 23'' H x 27'' W, est: $20,000/25,000
Note: This 1936 Festival of Arts scene depicts the 4th Annual Festival held in Laguna Beach and the 3rd and final time it was held on El Paseo Street (G. Felder,''Felderlaguna88.blogspot.com'', July 29, 2009, pg. 26), a short street adjacent to the Hotel Laguna and parallel to Main Beach Boardwalk. Standing in the middle of the painting is Frank Cuprien, long-time member of the Laguna Art Association (R. Westphal, ''Plein Air Painters of California: The Southland'', p. 136; Laguna Beach Museum of Art, ''Southern California Artist's 1890-1940'', p. 58). His knickers, belted blue jacket, white hair, and neatly trimmed beard made him a highly recognized local artist around town and at the 1936 festival, in which he undoubtedly exhibited his paintings. Cromwell?s colorful scene depicting scores of visitors perusing a variety of artworks is indeed an interesting, historical visual document of the festival?s nascent years.
