Circa 1890s, maker's mark ''Shreve, Crump & Low Co.'' with eagle trademark, a monumental centerpiece in the Neoclassical taste, the waved rim repousse-decorated to the exterior with fruiting grapevines over a squat circular gourd-form body issuing three satyr-headed twisted grape cordon-form handles from the shoulders, raised on a domed pierced fruiting foliate base, 12.625'' H x 19'' Dia., 225.950 oz troy approximately, est: $30,000/50,000 Note: Likely made for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, also known as the St. Louis World's Fair, which celebrated the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase. Copy of letter from Mr. Edgar M. Bingham, Jr., Antiques Department, Shreve, Crump & Low. Co. dated November 26, 1965 certifying the silver content, provenance and possible exposition dates to be provided to the purchaser. This lot also accompanied by a letter from Vroman’s Silver Shop, Glendora, CA, certifying that the centerpiece has been tested for sterling silver. Provenance: Private Collection, Laguna Beach, CA
Overall good condition, with general light marks, scratches, nicks and tarnishing commensurate with age. Scattered shallow dings to rim; the largest approximately .5'' x .25''. An approximately 1'' x 1'' dent to base of bowl.
