Note: Born in Silesia in 1849, Joseph Emmanuel Zwiener was one of the foremost cabinetmakers of the late 19th century, noted for his luxe works exhibiting the highest standard of craftsmanship, including the use of fine ormolu mounts. He employed as his sculptor Leon Message, who would also work with Francois Linke when Linke took over Zwiener's workshop in 1895 (it is thought that Linke may have worked under Zwiener when he first arrived in Paris in 1875). Zwiener's pieces were acquired by leading collectors of the 19th century, including Ludwig II, who commissioned a desk from him. Zwiener won the gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889 and exhibited works at the German Pavilion at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. In 1898 he received a large commission from the King of Prussia and was summoned to Berlin, where he continued to work after giving up his Paris workshop. Throughout over 100 years of business, Paris retailer Maison Jansen provided furnishings to houses of royalty, aristocracy and other notable clients around the world, including the White House during the Kennedy administration.
