  Deichbau Tetens, Johannes Nikolaus (Johan Nicolai) Reisen in die Marschländer an der Nordsee zur Beobachtung des Deichbaus in Briefen. Bd. I (= alles Ersch.). Mi 1 gefalt. Kupferkarte sowie 4 gefalt. Kupfertafeln. Leipzig, Weidmann, 1788. XVI, 444 S., 2 Bl. 8°. Marmor. HLdr. d. Zt. mit goldgepr. RSchild u. etw. RVerg. (berieben, etw. bestoßen). Dike construction. - Contemp. marbled half calf with gilt stamped label to spine and some spine gilt (rubbed, somewhat bumped). Rare and extensive work in letter form on the dike system on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein written on a trip to study dike construction in various countries on the Baltic and Atlantic coasts. With calculations on the best form of dikes and plates with mathematical diagrams. Severe storm surges in the late 18th century necessitated a centralisation and reform of the dike system, which is why the Danish government initiated an investigation into the condition of the dikes in the duchy. Tetens went into great detail about the extremely poor condition of the dike system, citing as the main causes the "irrationality" of the inhabitants of the marshes and their persistent tendency to interpret storm surges metaphysically. - Inside cover with handwritten note, title with stamps of a military library, paper browned and brownstained. Mit Berechnungen über die beste Form von Deichen und Tafeln mit mathematischen Diagrammen. Schwere Sturmfluten im späten 18. Jahrhundert erforderten eine Zentralisierung und Reform des Deichwesens, weswegen die dänische Regierung eine Untersuchung des Zustands der Deiche im Herzogtum veranlasste. Tetens ging sehr ausführlich auf den äußerst schlechten Zustand des Deichsystems ein und nannte als Hauptursachen die "Irrationalität" der Marschbewohner und ihre anhaltende Neigung, Sturmfluten metaphysisch zu interpretieren. - Innendeckel mit hs.
