Erste Ausgabe. - Nissen, 441. Wellcome V, 474. - Wurffbain (1655-1711) war Mediziner in Nürnberg. (Vgl. Hirsch-H. V, 1005) - "He dissected salamanders and described the food contents in the stomach. He confirmed that 'Salamandra' is live bearing and found 34 larvae in one female. He also observed the shedding of the animal's epidermis. And he proceeded to rebunk most of the prevailing myths ... The plates illustrate the external appearance of several species, the larvae, eggs, skeleton, internal organs including the urogenital system, and mythical figures from emblems and hieroglyphics. The two titles represent the first comprehensive basis for our modern understanding of salamander biology". (Adler II, 18). - Vorsätzer erneuert. Altersbedingt gebräunt und stellenweise braunfleckig. Das Frontispiz mit fachmännischen Restaurierungen. Im unteren Rand teils mit restaurierten Fehlstellen. Der nach den Tafeln eingebundene "Bericht an den Buchbinder" als Nachdruck.

Modern half vellum with gold stamped label on spine. - First edition. - Wurffbain (1655-1711) was a physician in Nuremberg. - Endpapers renewed. Browned due to age and brown spotting in places. The frontispiece with expert restorations. Lower margin partly with restored missing parts. The "Report to the Bookbinder" bound in after the plates as a reprint.
