Catalogue Note: William Edwin Bloomfield (1879-1969) was born in Belfast, Ireland and immigrated to the United States in 1884 at a young age with his mother. When she died soon after, he was adopted by the Starkweathers of Winchester, CT, and took their last name. He traveled extensively in Europe and studied in his early career with J. H. Twatchman, eventually settling in New York City where he taught and painted. Starkweather is also associated with Endless Caverns in Luray, Va, where he often vacationed, and he created a number of works while there, both of the caverns and other scenes intended for display in the commercial establishment.
