- Lot Description
WHITING MFG. CO. STERLING SILVER PRESENTATION FOOTED BOWL FOR GOVERNOR WILLIAM HODGES MANN (VIRGINIA, 1843-1927), round form well raised on a round foot, exterior side with presentation engraving, which reads, "THE GOVERNOR OF VIRGINIA / AND / MRS. WILLIAM HODGES MANN / FROM / THE GOVERNOR'S STAFF / JANUARY 31ST 1914". Base impressed with maker's mark for Whiting Mfg. Co. of North Attleboro, MA (active 1866-1875), New York City, NY (1876-1909), and Bridgeport, CT (1909-1926), in addition to "STERLING / 7101" above a 1913 date mark. Total weight: 17.78 ozt. Together with a sterling silver bread tray by R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co. of Wallingford, CT, having engraving of "1885 M-D 1910" to center, probably for the silver anniversary of the marriage of Governor Mann and his second wife, Etta Edloe Donnan (1861-1960), total weight of 8.415 ozt. Two pieces total. Circa 1913. Bowl 3 5/8" H, 9 1/4" D rim.
Catalogue Note: William Hodges Mann was born on July 13, 1843 in Williamsburg, VA to parents John Mann (1809-1853) and Mary Hunter Bowers (1814-1893). He attended Williamsburg Academy and, then, went to Brownsburg Academy in Brownsburg, Rockbridge Co., VA. At the age of 16, Mann became the Deputy Clerk of Nottoway Co. in Southside Virginia before returning to Williamsburg to enlist in the Confederate Army on April 20, 1861. He served as a private in the 12th Virginia Infantry.
After the war, Mann studied law and practiced in Nottoway Co. beginning in 1867. By 1870, he was the Commonwealth's Attorney for Nottoway and eventually became the first County Judge of Nottoway, serving from 1890 to 1892. In 1899, Mann was elected to represent the district in the Virginia State Senate until 1910, when he was elected and served as Virginia's Governor for a term. He became the last Confederate soldier to serve as Governor of the state and focused on advocating temperance and public education. Once he left office in 1914, Mann served as president of the Citizens' Bank and returned to his legal practice until his death.
In his personal life, Mann married his first wife, Sarah H. Fitzgerald (1845-1882), in 1869. After her death, he wedded his second wife, Etta, on October 28, 1885, which the present bread tray likely commemorated their 25th anniversary. The couple had two sons, Stuart Donnan who died in childhood, and William Hodges Mann, Jr. (1890-1953). The entire family is buried at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, VA.Condition
Mostly in very good overall condition with some wear, surface scratches, and nicks; bowl with a few scattered dents; tray with several dents.

Effective March 1, 2024 In-house shipping is no longer available with Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates (JSEA). Shipping of all lots is through one of two local UPS stores with whom we have successfully worked with in the past. Buyers will receive a shipping form to fill out and return to the UPS store. As a courtesy to our clientele, once the invoice is paid, JSEA will arrange transport and make delivery to each respective store at no extra charge. Once the items ship, buyers will receive a paid shipping invoice and tracking number.

Any paid invoice with outstanding fees will be subject to the storage fees listed below. The grace period begins once the buyer is notified of shipping charges.Due to excessive fraud, purchases can only be shipped to the billing address on the credit card used for payment. If you wish to have your purchases shipped to an alternate address, you must contact the front office to review and possibly approve the change.

If you are tax exempt, a copy of the sales and use certificate from your state must be presented and placed on file before the tax is removed from the invoice.

Contact the office at 540-434-3939 or email info@jeffreysevans.com to make an appointment if you plan to pick up your winnings. We will have your items ready to collect at your scheduled appointment time. All pick-ups must be scheduled at least twenty-four hours in advance.
Pick-up hours are Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm ET.
** Storage Fee Information
Items won must be picked up within (2) weeks after the date of the auction. Any items not picked up within (2) weeks of the sale are subject to an additional storage fee. Any paid invoice with outstanding fees will be subject to the storage fees listed below. The grace period begins once the buyer is notified of shipping charges.
After 35 days, there will be a storage fee implemented, of $10 per day, per large item e.g. furniture, and $5 per day, per small item.
Any items that have not been picked up within thirty(30) days of the sale will be considered abandoned and become property of Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates.Accounts unpaid after twenty five (25) days of the sale will be subject to a 5% monthly finance charge. Administrative fees may apply.
