THEODORE V. PETICOLAS (RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, 1800-1865), ATTRIBUTED DOUBLE PORTRAIT, charcoal/pastel on paper, a pair of portraits of a young husband and wife. No signature located. Old typed label verso identifying sitters as Jane Gay Robertson Bernard and John Hipkins Bernard of Caroline Co., VA. After marriage, the couple moved to a Bernard family plantation named "Rosehill," which John Bernard re-christened "Gay Mont" in honor of his new bride. Housed back-to-back and under double glass in a modern black-painted frame. Circa 1816-1820. 21 7/8" x 16" sight, 30 7/8" x 24 1/4" OA.

Catalogue Note: Theodore V. Petoicolas (1800-1865) was the youngest son of Philipe Abraham Peticolas, a miniaturist and portrait painter in Richmond, VA. Like his father, Theodore became an artist, but left Virginia around 1820. He is thereafter recorded as working in Cincinnati, OH and Huntsville, AL.
