approximately 220 pieces, comprising an extensive collection of photographs and ephemera from the archives of the late Joseph Imburgio Bulger, lawyer and prominent Chicagoan of the 1920’s and 30’s, primarily concerning the building and operations of the "Italian Village" at the "Century of Progress" 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, of which Mr. Bulger was a principal organizer and driving force. Highlights include letters and photographs of burlesque actress and dancer Sally Rand, mostly relating to her substantial role in the "Italian Village" entertainment, ephemera and photographs related to Italo Balbo’s transatlantic flight, and a program from a banquet held in honor of Guglielmo Marconi, inventor of radio, signed by the Nobel Prize winner.
Sally Rand material includes three letters, a Christmas Card, and a postcard, all signed by Ms. Rand, five Maurice Seymour studio photos of a nude Ms. Rand performing her "Balloon Dance", one of which is signed by Ms. Rand, along with other photographs of Rand. The other 150+ photographs, most of which are 8" x 10", include 14 by Kaufmann & Fabry Co., the official photographers for the "Century of Progress", signed celebrities including Jimmy Durante and Max Bear, other non-signed celebrities, General Italo Balbo, construction, performances, etc.
Additional ephemera includes a typed list of the employees of the "Italian Village" and their salary (Sally Rand was paid $2,500 while the next highest salary was $200). Circa 1932-1941. Provenance: Property of a direct descendant of Joseph Bulger.
