SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA, PROBABLY SHENANDOAH CO., POPLAR AND WALNUT PUNCHED-TIN-PANELED FOOD / PIE SAFE, the rectangular one-board top over two hinged cabinet doors above simple applied base molding and two half drawers, the whole raised on plain turned feet formed from the stiles. Each door and end set with three punched-tin panels having a highly developed design of Neoclassical double-handled covered urn in scalloped oval reserve flanked by eight-pointed corner stars. Yellow pine and poplar secondary woods. Later red-washed/stained surface (UPDATED 8/27/15). Circa 1840-1860. 52 3/4" H, 40 1/2" W, 18 1/4" D.

Catalogue Note: This safe is from a small but recognizable group featuring distinctive urn punched tins and closely related cabinetwork. Most examples can be documented to Shenandoah Co. The forthcoming publication on food safes of the Shenandoah Valley by Kurt Russ and Jeffrey Evans will include a safe from the same cabinet shop and discuss the attributes of this group.
Hinges, knobs, and door latch hardware replaced. Possible restoration to molded frames housing tin panels and base molding. Tins with very minor rusting, denting, and other wear.
