SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA LATE FEDERAL WALNUT CHEST OF DRAWERS, the rectangular top with generous overhang to rear, slightly beveled edge, and applied molding over four graduated drawers with cockbeaded edges, top drawer with slight overhang, all flanked by turned and ebonized columns applied to the stiles and raised on unusual turned feet that are mortised into the underside of the case. Refinished surface with mellow color. Circa 1830-1850. 48 3/4" H, 38 3/4" W, 21 1/2" D.
Provenance: From the estate collection of Floyd and Julia Reynolds, Alexandria and Shenandoah County, VA.
Purchased from the estate of Annie Miller, Jerome, VA.
Catalogue Note: There is a strong tradition of case furniture featuring ebonized turnings in Rockingham and southern Shenandoah Counties. One such group can be attributed to the Andes family. The discovery of an additional chest of slightly earlier form (Lot 465 in this sale) and inscribed with maker's name, Philip Depoy (b. 1800), adds new information to the story and seems to indicate the emergence of a regional form involving output from a variety of cabinetmakers in the area. This new research is included as part of the 2014 Safe exhibition at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester with catalogue publication to follow in 2015.
Condition
Knobs replaced and ebonized elements likely repainted. Minor repairs to cockbeading, otherwise very good condition.
