ROCKBRIDGE CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA FOLK ART FRAKTUR BIRTH RECORD, watercolor and ink on paper, featuring bold floral devices on a green vine anchored in a double-handled urn at bottom, executed for "John William / Son of William A. and Elizabeth Forbes, Born June 27th, 1844". Housed under glass in a modern paint-decorated frame. Circa 1844. 12" x 10" sight, 14 7/8" x 12 5/8" OA.
Catalogue Note: The present folk art fraktur birth record appears to be the work of an itinerant artist who worked in parts of Maryland and the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia during the 1840's and 1850's. William A. Forbes and Elizabeth Forbes (the parents listed on the work) are recorded (father listed as wheelwright) in the Rockbridge Co., VA 1850 census living with four children, one of whom is six-year-old John W. Recently, in an interesting twist to the story, a folk art fraktur family record by the same artist as the present lot was offered in an Alex Cooper Auction in Towson, Maryland on May 31, 2015 (Lot 1691). This example, made for the Yessler family of Chewsville, Washington Co., Maryland, dated 1845, represents an interesting pattern and likely suggests the movement of an itinerant folk artist traveling up and down the Great Wagon Road in search of commissions.
