Catalogue Note: Lewis Miller (1796-1882) was a prolific American folk artist, known primarily for his landscape and genre scenes of various 19th-century East Coast locales. Miller, born in York, Pennsylvania, began keeping a journal at a young age, which he filled with watercolor sketches, a routine that he would maintain throughout his life. A carpenter by trade, Miller eventually traveled to Europe and many areas of the United States and Canada. He also visited Christiansburg, VA sporadically, and came to live there with relatives as an elderly gentleman. The present lot, executed in this later period, makes a statement about the artist's abilities by demonstrating the work of his steady hand, even at the age of eighty.
