RARE AND IMPORTANT WYTHE CO., VALLEY OF VIRGINIA PAINT-DECORATED POPLAR BLANKET CHEST, of substantial form, the hinged rectangular lid with applied edge moldings over a dovetailed case, raised on an applied cut-out bracket-foot base with some original blocking. Original paint-decorated surface featuring two oblong panels, each with notched corners and design of small handled urn below large central tulip flanked by four smaller tulips, central tulip in left panel with halo-like device above. Decoration attributed to John Huddle (1772-1839). Circa 1812-1829. 27 1/4" H, 50" W, 22" D.

Catalogue Note: The present blanket chest exhibits decorative features that link it with the later group of paint-decorated chests from Wythe Co., VA. According to Roddy Moore in his 1982 Antiques Magazine article, "Painted Chests from Wythe Co., Virginia", these later examples date from 1812-1829 and feature two oblong front panels. Many have dates incised in an urn on the front, and one is known to bear the signature of "Johannes Hudel" (John Huddle). The present example is similarly dated, and possibly signed, though the information presented is difficult to decipher in its present state.
Condition
Good condition overall with wear to paint-decorated surface. Restoration to rear feet. One section of applied side molding to top detached but present.
