brilliant electric/copper blue, each six-petal socket with lower extension, raised on a medium dolphin-form standard and square base, wafer construction. Probably Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 9 7/8" H, 3 5/8" SQ base. Circa 1845-1870.
Literature: Parallels B & K IV, fig. 4055.
Provenance: From an East Coast private collection.
Catalogue Note: While a pair of dolphin candlesticks in this color is a rarity, finding a matching set of four is virtually unheard of. It is not known how candlesticks in this period were retailed. However, considering the large dining tables common to the time, it is certainly conceivable that candlesticks were available in sets of four or more.
Condition
Outstanding condition, one is proof, others with one or two shallow chips to underside of socket petals, none of which disfigure the profiles, one base with a flake to lower edge, others with a shallow chip to outer edge of one upper step corner.
