PHILIP DEPOY (B. 1800), ATTRIBUTED, ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA FEDERAL WALNUT SEMI-HIGH CHEST OF DRAWERS, the rectangular top with applied edge molding above two short drawers with scratch-beaded edges over four full graduated drawers with scratch-beaded edges, the bottom two examples with strong figure, above an applied base molding and raised on tall ring-turned feet. Yellow pine and poplar secondary woods. Inscriptions to upper right drawer, including "Made by Philip Depoy - 1836 / the original owner Sally Bowman - married Christian Showalter". Fine old surface with rich, warm color. Circa 1830-1840. 53" H, 40 1/2" W, 19 1/2" D.
Provenance: From an Ohio private collection.
Catalogue Note: The present chest of drawers is related to a growing group of documented case furniture, often featuring ebonized turnings, in Rockingham and southern Shenandoah Counties. One such group can be attributed to the Andes family. The discovery of this additional chest of slightly earlier form and inscribed with maker's name adds new information to the story and seems to indicate the emergence of a regional form involving output from a variety of cabinetmakers in the area. This new research is included as part of the 2014 Safe exhibition at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester with catalogue publication to follow in 2015. Phillip DePoy was born in 1800 in Virginia to Conrad DePoy (born in Berks Co, PA) and Esther Hauer. He married Lydia Bowman (younger sister of Sally) in Rockingham County in 1842 and is listed in the 1850 Census as a farmer. Sarah (Sally) Bowman was born in 1820 in Virginia. She married Christian Showalter in Rockingham Co. in 1838 (one of the two inscriptions notes this). Christian Showalter was born in Harrisonburg in 1819. The couple had seven children, and Sally died in 1886 in Rockingham Co. Christian died in 1893.
Loss of applied edge molding top back right side and back edge of top. Pulls probably replaced, otherwise very good condition. UPDATED 11/11/14: Cracks/age separations to top.
