Catalogue Note: Sophia Louise Appleton Bradbury (b. 1836) was listed on the staff of the Boston Athenaeum in 1892 where her brother-in-law, Charles Ammi Cutter (1837-1903) was the head librarian from 1868 to 1892. While it is not known if she painted other works, she did publish a serio-comic opera titled "The Pirate" in 1865.
The original Copley portraits that she copied are in Harvard Art Museums' collection. They were placed there by John James Appleton in 1855. The portraits have extensive publication and exhibition records.
