MARTHA ANN HONEYWELL (AMERICAN 1786-1856) FOLK ART CUT-AND-PASTED SILHOUETTE OF A LADY, cut paper and ink on paper, each a bust-length depiction of a sitter in profile, the Martha Ann Honeywell (American, 1786-1856) example depicts a woman in a bonnet and reads "Cut with the Mouth by M A Honeywell-" in script along the bottom margin. Together with an example by Master Hubard which depicts a man, a description on the backing paper verso identifies the artist and is probably taken from a label which is either now missing or is retained under the backing paper. Two pieces total. Each is housed in a period gilt molded frame. First half 19th century. Honeywell example 3 3/4" x 2 3/4" sight, 5 1/8" x 4 1/8" OA.
Catalogue Note: Born with no hands and only three toes on one foot, Martha Ann Honeywell (1786-1856) was a severely disabled itinerant artist who, despite these physical limitations, was nonetheless able to achieve international recognition for her creative gifts. According to Laura Daen in her 2017 article “Martha Ann Honeywell: Art, Performance, and Disability in the Early Republic” for the Journal of the Early Republic, the artist spent nearly 60 years traveling to five countries and 32 cities exhibiting her craft using only her mouth and remaining appendages. In 1807, for instance, Honeywell advertised her services at the Indian Queen Tavern, Fairfax Street, Alexandria, Virginia. A powerful figure who transcended physical obstacles, Martha Ann Honeywell stands as one of America’s most important 19th-century disabled artists.
William James Hubbard (1807-1862) was recognized as a gifted silhouette artist at an early age in his native England. He was so successful, in fact, that he traveled to the United States in 1824 in an effort to ply his craft and expand his clientele. Tired of the silhouette craft after several years, however, he turned to oil painting at the behest of several artist friends and continued to find work in the 1820s and 1830s in London and in the United States, namely Baltimore and Philadelphia. In 1832, Hubard moved to Gloucester, VA, where he married, and, after several more years of travel back and forth to Europe, eventually settled in Richmond, VA where he established a foundry in an effort to produce bronze reproductions of Jean Antoine Houdon's (1741-1828) bust of George Washington in the State Capitol. The project failed, however, and Hubard was ruined financially. He was later able to secure a Confederate government contract for producing ammunition at the start of the Civil War but died tragically in an explosion at the factory.
Good condition overall, the Honeywell example with moderate all-over toning and staining along the lower margin; the Hubard example with minor edge toning. Not examined out of frames.
