IMPORTANT STAMPED "H.SMITH & CO.", ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JUG, salt-glazed, "4" gallon capacity mark, ovoid form with a single incised shoulder ring, squared mouth, strap handle with medial groove, incised with a script "D" under the base. Brushed cobalt classic "Alexandria Motif" floral decoration with petals cascading from the central bloom, additional cobalt at lower handle terminal. Hugh Smith's (1769-1856) Wilkes Street pottery, Alexandria, VA. Circa 1825-1831. 18" HOA.
Published: Wilder - Alexandria, Virginia Pottery, front cover and p. 119, figs. HS037 and HS037b. Literature: Stamp as ibid, p. 319, Mk V.
Provenance: From the collection of the late Eddie Wilder of Alexandria, Virginia.
Catalogue Note: Eddie Wilder noted that "Jugs made for and marked with H. Smith & Co. are extremely rare." In addition, this is the only decorated Alexandria jug illustrated by Wilder and is possibly the only jug of its kind known. He went onto comment "This wonderful piece of Alexander stoneware is a museum quality rarity." The incised "D" under the base of this jug is possibly for David Jarbour, the well-known free-black potter of Alexandria. Jarbour is recorded in the 1833 tax records as working at Hugh Smith's pottery.
