Catalogue Note: Merelina Evelyn Lucinda Seymour Newell (1878-1967) was born in Isle of Wight, England to parents Col. Frederick Henry Seymour (1842-1907) and Myra Thesea Merilina Symonds (1858-1941). Around the turn of the century, the family resided in Sonora, Mexico and, during the summers, in Redondo, California, before settling in Ohio. Evelyn married Ashbel Barney Newell (1868-1950), the president of Tennessee Central railway, on April 25, 1910. According to The Oasis newspaper of Nogales, Arizona, the marriage was solemnized in Mentor, OH at the residence of James R. Garfield, who was the son of U.S. President of James A. Garfield and served as U.S. Secretary of the Interior during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency from 1907 to 1909.
Evelyn and her mother, Myra, were noted golfers, and they competed at the first Toledo City Tournament in 1918, which took place at the Country Club. Evelyn won that championship with her mother coming in second place. In addition to participating in tournaments, Evelyn served as president of Toledo Women's District Golf Association (TWDGA) in 1922.
