of ovular form, the reticulated and pierced walls with applied flowerheads at the interstices, the entwined branch handles to the sides terminating in clusters of flowerheads and leaves, the interior sides painted in Kakiemon palette with various geometric and foliate designs, the interior base centering a foliate border surrounding a wreath made of flowering prunus branches around a blue twig-form circle. Unmarked. Attributed to the Studio of James Giles, London. Circa 1780. 4 1/2" H, 10 1/2" W.
Provenance: Property of a New England private collector. Purchased from Earle D. Vandekar, Knightsbridge, NY.
Very good to good condition, a tiny chip filled to rim (now visible). One handle with firing cracks and foliate terminates restored; the other handle glued back on to the body, and with florettes restored. Considering its size and age the basket is a rare survivor.
