of differing size, each with press-molded scallop-shell bands on plain rims, the border picked out with band of green enamel decoration, the faces centering a long-tailed peafowl painted in ocher, orange and brown, standing on curling brown branches, surrounded by green-sponged foliage. Unmarked. Attributed to Swansea. Circa 1800-1820. 8 9/16" D.
Published: George and Mickey Deike - Feathers and Foliage, p. 100, fig. 5.65.
Provenance: From the personal collection of George and Mickey Deike.
Catalogue Note: As the Deike's note in their book, the chemical disagreement between the pearlware glaze and the green enamel caused interesting conditions, such as is seen in the sponging area just below the bird, with an iridescence there and wherever else the green enamel is applied. The chemical issue may have extended to some mineral property of the brown enamel, also seen on the bird's body.
Good condition, one with a small and shallow chip to face, the other in moderate condition, with scratching and abrasions to rim, and extensive crazing and staining due to exposure to heat.
