the copper luster body with wide spout over ribbed neck above a globular waist, tapering to a waisted cylindrical foot, with yellow-ground band, with lustered flourishes and roundels enclosing black transfer-printed cartouches of "Cornwallis," and another cartouche with a portrait of "Lafayette," held aloft in the heavenly clouds by angelic women holding a halo formed of laurel leaves amidst the rays in the sky. Unmarked. Circa 1825. 3 7/8" H.
Literature: Arman/Arman - Anglo-American Ceramics Part I, p. 51, pl. 4.29. John/Baker - Old English Lustre Pottery, color illustration 50B, shows the larger example of this jug.
Provenance: From a New England private collection.
Catalogue Note: This is the smaller of two sizes of this commemorative that Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates has offered. The larger version has more room for the additional descriptions within the roundels, and for more ribbing to the lower body of the jug.
Very good condition, with some wear to transfers and to luster.
